Driver Arrested After Van Kills Cyclist on Viareggio Overpass

Carabinieri say surveillance footage together with witness reports produced the evidence that led to an arrest on criminal charges.

Overview

  • The collision happened early Friday, September 11, around 3:00 a.m. on the old overpass by Torre Matilde in Viareggio and left 46-year-old cyclist Linda Martinucci fatally injured.
  • Emergency crews were called at 2:57 a.m.; an automedica and a Croce Verde ambulance reached the scene within minutes and attempted resuscitation but Martinucci suffered cardiac arrest and died during transport.
  • Investigators from the Carabinieri immediately carried out on-site inspections and began collecting CCTV footage and witness statements to reconstruct the crash.
  • Police used a license plate noted by witnesses and camera images to trace an Opel van, leading to the arrest of a 37-year-old man on charges of vehicular homicide and hit-and-run while a 33-year-old passenger was reported for omission of aid.
  • Authorities said forensic review will focus on a reported overtaking maneuver that may have caused the impact and the arrest advances the probe toward formal charges and court proceedings.
