Driver Arrested After Blue Mountains Highway Crashes as Off-Duty Officer Is Bitten

Investigators are examining whether a single Hyundai was behind a string of Blue Mountains crashes.

Overview

  • Triple-0 calls began shortly before 10:30am reporting a white Hyundai Santa Fe being driven erratically east along the Great Western Highway between Mt Victoria and Glenbrook.
  • Police say collisions included a crash with a Honda at Hazelbrook around 10:40am and another with a BMW near Glenbrook.
  • The driver allegedly fled on foot and was chased and detained on McCauley Crescent by an off-duty police officer, with help from passers-by.
  • Police allege the officer was bitten during the arrest, and both the officer and the driver were treated by paramedics and taken to Nepean Hospital.
  • The driver remains under police guard as officers investigate reports of at least seven related incidents and appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers or Springwood Police.
