Drift Exploiter Sends $109M in Ether Into Tornado Cash

Two-day mixer deposits deepen the attackers' effort to hide proceeds from the April $295 million Solana hack.

Overview

  • On Oct. 20–21, wallets tied to the April 1 Drift Protocol exploit routed about 44,510 ETH, roughly $109 million, into the Tornado Cash mixer in repeated 100‑ETH batch deposits.
  • Blockchain trackers show the moves came in two tranches—about 25,700 ETH on Oct. 20 and about 18,800 ETH on Oct. 21—matching the exploiter's prior mixing pattern.
  • Arkham and other monitors say the exploiter's tracked balances fell from roughly 81,000 ETH before the transfers to about 56,569 ETH after them, a snapshot that varies by tracker and time.
  • Sending Ether into Tornado Cash makes on‑chain tracing harder but does not by itself prove the funds were cashed out, recovered, or moved off‑chain into fiat.
  • Drift opened DFX recovery claims on Oct. 1 with an initial pool of about 3.1 million USDT and pledged support from partners including Tether, but that pool is small compared with the roughly $295 million loss and the renewed laundering raises recovery challenges.
