DRI Seizes 4.7 Kg Cocaine at Mumbai Airport, Arrests 5 in Colombo Courier Bust

Investigators are pursuing links to a larger transnational network after field tests found cocaine concealed in coffee packets.

Overview

  • Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted a female passenger arriving from Colombo at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
  • Nine pouches hidden inside coffee packets were recovered from her baggage, with NDPS field tests indicating the substance was cocaine.
  • The intended recipient at the airport was detained, and three additional suspects tied to financing, logistics and distribution were taken into custody.
  • All five individuals have been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, according to the finance ministry.
  • The DRI highlighted a recent pattern of syndicates using Indian women as couriers and hiding narcotics in everyday food items, as the probe to dismantle the wider network continues.
