DRI Mumbai Seizes 20 Tonnes of Chinese Firecrackers Hidden as 'Leggings' at Nhava Sheva

The interception underscores a continuing DRI drive targeting restricted fireworks shipments that use concealment to evade licensing rules.

Overview

  • Officers found about 95% of the container filled with concealed firecrackers and seized roughly 60,000 pieces valued at Rs 6.32 crore under the Customs Act.
  • The shipment was misdeclared as leggings to bypass scrutiny at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, according to DRI officials.
  • The action forms part of Operation Fire Trail, under which about 100 metric tonnes of illicit fireworks worth roughly Rs 35 crore were earlier seized from seven containers across Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Kandla SEZ.
  • Imports of fireworks are classified as restricted and require licences from DGFT and PESO under the Explosives Rules, 2008.
  • Officials warned that such consignments often contain hazardous chemicals and pose serious risks to public safety, port infrastructure and the wider supply chain, with investigations into the network continuing.
