DRI Mumbai Cracks Down on Gold Smuggling Syndicates in Major Seizures and Arrests

Over 36 kilograms of smuggled gold worth ₹29.55 crore seized in coordinated operations, with six arrests and a gold refining facility uncovered.

  • The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 12.5 kilograms of smuggled gold worth ₹9.95 crore at Mumbai International Airport, apprehending six individuals, including three airport staff members.
  • The operation uncovered a smuggling syndicate involving airport personnel and international transit passengers, who facilitated the illegal delivery of gold outside the airport.
  • In a separate raid, the DRI discovered a gold extraction and refining facility in Mumbai, seizing 23.92 kilograms of unaccounted gold, 37 kilograms of silver, and ₹5.4 lakh in cash, totaling ₹19.6 crore in value.
  • The alleged mastermind behind the gold refining operation, a Mulund resident, was arrested, with authorities citing a lack of documentation to justify the source of the seized assets.
  • These coordinated actions dealt a significant blow to gold smuggling networks, with the DRI emphasizing its commitment to curbing illegal gold trade in India.
