Dresden Scraps Margon-Arena Overhaul After Saxony Declines Funding

The city, working with Dresdner SC, will confine work to safety repairs financed from a €5 million municipal pot with emergency fixes targeted for 2027.

Overview

  • The comprehensive modernization of the 27-year-old venue has been abandoned after 14 months of unsuccessful efforts to secure state money from the Free State of Saxony.
  • Dresdner SC’s president Birke Tröger called the outcome regrettable and warned that without rapid repairs the team’s match operations could be massively endangered.
  • Planned works now focus on fire protection, ventilation, roofs, the sports floor and building automation, with implementation to proceed as in-place rehabilitation.
  • Earlier concepts ranged from a city-led project exceeding €40 million to a club plan of €15 million that reportedly hinged on about €7.5 million from Saxony, which did not materialize.
  • Hopes for supplemental federal support under the so-called Sportmilliarde have not yielded funds, and no replacement state or federal financing has been confirmed.
