Dresden Hygiene Museum Opens Two-Year 'Bin ich schön!' Studio on Beauty

Built with contributions from local residents, the reimagined space foregrounds contemporary, personal experiences of beauty.

Overview

  • The last room of the permanent exhibition Abenteuer Mensch has been converted into the participatory Studio der Dinge, replacing the historical Schwarzkopf display "Schönheit, Haut und Haar."
  • The project engaged around 100 Dresdeners and about a dozen partner organizations whose donated objects and stories shape the display, including 32 items presented with short video interviews.
  • The show is organized into four sections — "Vor dem Spiegel," "Gegen Schönheit," "Durch den Filter," and "Ware Schönheit" — connecting community contributions with historical holdings.
  • The installation opens to visitors on Saturday, 25 October, with hours Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, and it is slated to remain on view for two years.
  • Funding comes from Germany’s federal government, the Free State of Saxony, and cosmetics company Charlotte Meentzen, with curators targeting gaps in the museum’s collection through this format.
