DRDO’s 120‑Km Pinaka Guided Rocket Succeeds in Maiden Test

Overview

• The LRGR‑120 was flight‑tested from ITR Chandipur to its full 120 km range, executed planned manoeuvres, and struck the target with high accuracy.
• An in‑service Pinaka launcher fired the rocket, demonstrating compatibility to launch multiple Pinaka variants without modifying the platform.
• Range radars, electro‑optical sensors, and telemetry tracked the rocket throughout its trajectory, with the trial coordinated by ITR and the Proof & Experimental Establishment.
• ARDE led the design with HEMRL, supported by DRDL and RCI; DRDO chief Samir V. Kamat witnessed the test, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the guided rockets as a “game changer.”
• On the same day, the Defence Acquisition Council cleared procurement proposals worth about ₹79,000 crore that include long‑range guided Pinaka ammunition, with further evaluations expected before induction.
