DRC Military Tribunal Sentences Joseph Kabila to Death in Absentia for Treason

The verdict follows the removal of his parliamentary immunity, culminating a swift military trial in absentia.

Overview

  • Judges found Kabila guilty of treason, participation in an insurrectional movement, war crimes, crimes against humanity, murder, rape, conspiracy and advocacy of war crimes.
  • The court described him as the leader of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), identified as the political arm of the M23 rebellion in the east.
  • He was ordered to pay $33 billion in damages, including $29 billion to the state and $2 billion each to North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.
  • The case opened on July 25 in Kinshasa after the Senate lifted his immunity on May 22, and the military auditor general sought the death penalty in August.
  • Authorities suspended his PPRD party and seized its assets in April, while fighting with M23 continues in the east as the UN and several countries accuse Rwanda of backing the rebels, which Kigali denies.
