DRC Discharges Last Ebola Patient, Starting WHO’s 42-Day Countdown

Health teams now focus on surveillance in rural Kasai after a rapid multi-partner response contained spread.

Overview

  • No new Ebola cases have been detected since September 25, according to the World Health Organization.
  • Since the outbreak was declared on September 4 in Bulape and Mweka, authorities have recorded 64 cases, including 53 confirmed and 11 probable, with 19 recoveries and 45 deaths.
  • The response established a 32-bed treatment centre in Bulape equipped with a two-bed Intensive Infectious Disease Treatment Module, marking the first deployment of its kind outside a simulation in the region.
  • More than 35,000 people have been vaccinated in the Bulape area as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.
  • WHO and the DRC Ministry of Health say the outbreak can be declared over in early December if no additional cases are found during the 42-day monitoring period.
