Overview

  • The Dragon Bravo and White Sage fires remain fully uncontained more than 10 days after lightning strikes ignited them
  • Park officials say the 1937 Grand Canyon Lodge was lost along with between 50 and 80 other structures, including cabins, visitor facilities and employee housing
  • Flames ruptured a wastewater treatment plant, releasing chlorine gas that prompted evacuations of firefighters and hikers in the inner canyon
  • The North Rim has closed for the rest of the season; officials report no injuries or fatalities despite widespread evacuations
  • Governor Katie Hobbs has demanded an independent review of the National Park Service’s response, questioning the initial confine-and-contain approach
