Draconids Continue Through Oct. 10 After Peak, as Bright Moon Cuts Visibility

Best viewing comes shortly after sunset by facing toward Draco from a dark site.

Overview

  • The shower’s main peak occurred on Oct. 8, with activity continuing from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10.
  • A nearly full Moon is washing out fainter meteors, though occasional bright fireballs may still be seen.
  • Under dark skies, observers can expect roughly 10–20 meteors per hour, with lower counts in moonlit or urban areas.
  • Watch shortly after sunset by looking northwest toward the radiant in Draco near the star Eltanin and stay out for at least an hour.
  • For better results, choose rural or elevated spots, avoid bright screens or white lights, and allow 15–30 minutes for eye adaptation.
