U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., left, and U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, right, have called on Canadian officials to reverse a CFIA order to have a group of ostriches on a B.C. bird farm killed.

Overview

  • A Federal Court of Appeal decision last week left the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s order intact to depopulate roughly 400 ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms after an H5N1 outbreak that killed 69 birds in December and January.
  • U.S. health official Mehmet Oz is pressing Canada to allow relocation and study of the flock, appearing with billionaire John Catsimatidis and offering to house the birds at his Florida ranch.
  • Oz argues the ostriches now appear healthy and could yield research insights, and he says he has discussed study plans with U.S. health officials including Jay Bhattacharya.
  • The farm’s lawyer says they are seeking an emergency stay and preparing an application for the Supreme Court of Canada to pause the cull.
  • The CFIA says stamping out exposed flocks reduces mutation and spread risk and protects trade, and it plans a written response to the relocation proposal while withholding operational timelines.
