DR Congo Military Court Sentences Ex-President Joseph Kabila to Death for Treason in Absentia

Military judges cast him as the political head of a coalition linked to M23 following the loss of his immunity.

Overview

  • The Superior Military Tribunal in Kinshasa delivered the in-absentia verdict after a trial that opened on July 25.
  • He was found guilty of treason, participation in an insurrection, homicide, rape and torture, as well as crimes against the peace and security of humanity.
  • The judgment orders $33 billion in damages, with $29 billion to the state and $2 billion each to North Kivu and South Kivu.
  • Armed forces auditor general Lucien René Likulia had sought the death penalty in August, citing Kabila as the mastermind of M23 violence that the UN and several countries say is backed by Rwanda.
  • The ruling follows the Senate’s removal of his immunity and the government’s suspension and asset seizure of his PPRD party, while fighting in the east continues despite recent accords.
