DP World Begins Operations at Syria's Tartus Port Under 30-Year, $800 Million Plan

The long-term concession launches a phased upgrade to modernize Tartus into a digitally enabled Eastern Mediterranean hub.

Overview

  • The formal handover from the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports took place on November 12, triggering on-site assessments and operational planning.
  • Initial works focus on technical surveys and near-term dredging of access channels, basins and berths to improve navigability.
  • A 22-metre harbour tug, Al Fath, with a 50-tonne bollard pull has entered service to support vessel movements and emergency response.
  • Medium-term plans include upgrading quays, yards and warehouses, expanding handling and storage capacity, and deploying DP World's digital platforms with staff training.
  • The concession was signed last summer in a ceremony witnessed by President Ahmad Al Shara, with DP World's Sultan bin Sulayem and Syria's Qutaiba Badawi as signatories.
