Dozens Rescued in Western Alaska Flooding From Halong Remnants as Three Remain Missing

Overview

  • By Monday, joint state and federal operations reported 51 lives saved from Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, including at least 34 air and ground rescues confirmed earlier by Alaska State Troopers.
  • Hurricane-force gusts around 100 mph and record storm surge pushed water more than 6 feet above normal high tide, sweeping houses off foundations in multiple Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta villages.
  • At least eight homes in Kipnuk were pushed from their foundations and multiple houses in Kwigillingok were displaced, with shelters housing nearly 600 people in Kipnuk and about 300 in Kwigillingok.
  • Alaska Air and Army National Guard units and the U.S. Coast Guard deployed HH-60 and MH-60 helicopters and HC-130 aircraft for evacuations, searches and medical transports, with no fatalities confirmed.
  • Gov. Mike Dunleavy broadened the state disaster declaration as coastal flood warnings lingered into Monday and damaged runways, power and communications complicated relief deliveries.
