Dozens of Schools Close After Recall of Children’s Coloured Sand Over Asbestos

Authorities say tests have found no airborne fibres, indicating a low immediate inhalation risk.

Overview

  • In the ACT, 15 schools and seven preschools were fully closed and six schools partially closed to allow testing and licensed remediation, with officials aiming to update families on reopening plans by Sunday.
  • Brisbane’s Mancel College shut its campus for the day after locating the recalled sand used in sensory play, advising parents it was acting out of caution.
  • The ACCC recall covers Kadink Sand (1.3kg), Educational Colours Rainbow Sand (1.3kg) and Creatistics Coloured Sand (1kg) sold nationally from 2020 to 2025 at retailers including Officeworks and education suppliers.
  • Regulators say asbestos was detected in some samples in fibre bundles rather than respirable form, WorkSafe ACT reported early air monitoring results were negative for airborne fibres, and the exposure risk is considered low.
  • New Zealand issued a voluntary recall and its Ministry of Education says about 30 schools and 30 early learning services have made contact as authorities in both countries continue testing, containment and safe disposal through licensed professionals.
