Overview

  • Authorities reported at least 30 deaths on the Vaishno Devi trek, with overall fatalities across J&K reported between the mid-30s and low-40s as recoveries continued.
  • Highways and bridges were washed away, including a 200‑meter stretch of the Manali–Leh road and a portion of Jammu’s fourth Tawi bridge, while rail services were widely cancelled and telecom links were disrupted.
  • Army columns, NDRF and SDRF teams led large rescue and evacuation efforts, with thousands moved to safer areas and relief camps set up across affected districts.
  • Rivers ran above danger marks across the region, the Madhopur/Modhopur barrage crossed one lakh cusec, and the Jhelum breached flood-alert gauges in south Kashmir before levels began to ease in some areas.
  • Punjab and Uttar Pradesh issued high alerts as swollen Himalayan rivers and dam releases inundated communities, with the IMD warning of continued heavy rain, thunderstorms and landslide risk.
