Downtown Denver YMCA to Close Dec. 30 as Facility Is Sold to Colorado Coalition for the Homeless

The move follows a pandemic-era drop in downtown membership.

Overview

  • CCH will acquire the YMCA’s remaining 45,000 square feet, with the sale expected to close in January 2026.
  • CCH plans renovations to expand affordable and permanent supportive housing, replacing boarding-house layouts with private kitchens and bathrooms and adding resident community spaces.
  • The coalition already owns the building’s upper floors, converted in 2001 into roughly 200 supportive units, and says historic features, including the early indoor basketball court, will be preserved.
  • Reported timelines differ, with CCH indicating a renovation start in fall 2026 and CBS reporting a 2027 start, and opening targeted for 2027.
  • YMCA members can transfer to five other metro locations, programs will continue off-site and online, and the one full-time and 15 part-time downtown staff are being offered roles elsewhere.
