Overview

• The Department of Telecommunications issued a Unified Licence to Starlink with conditions requiring all Indian user data to be stored domestically and processed through in-country earth station gateways.
• The grant follows a five-year authorisation from IN-SPACe and earlier GMPCS approval, completing India’s multi-tier regulatory review by late July.
• The DoT has asked TRAI to set terms for satellite communication spectrum and will soon allocate trial frequencies for compliance testing.
• Starlink must build ground infrastructure and conduct security compliance demonstrations before its commercial broadband service can launch.
• Satellite-based internet services are projected to generate employment through installation, operation and maintenance of gateways and user terminals.
