DOSB Approves Scoring Matrix and 2026 Timeline to Pick Germany’s Olympic Bid City

Political backing is strong despite the DOSB's challenge to a funding law it says would curb sport autonomy.

Overview

  • Delegates at the DOSB member assembly in Frankfurt voted overwhelmingly (484 yes, one no) to adopt a points-based evaluation matrix for choosing the national Olympic and Paralympic bidder.
  • An extraordinary assembly on 26 September 2026 in Baden-Baden will select the single candidate after bidders receive formal questions in February and submit final concepts by 4 June 2026.
  • The matrix assesses international competitiveness, national acceptance, operational and sporting readiness, vision and sustainability, and costs, with an evaluation commission of sport and political representatives able to make a recommendation.
  • Public approval is pivotal: Munich’s referendum passed with 66.4 percent, RheinRuhr votes on 19 April 2026 and Hamburg on 31 May, while Berlin cannot hold a referendum and faces stronger organized opposition.
  • The federal government reiterates support for a bid and a DOSB poll shows 74 percent national backing, even as the DOSB opposes the Sportfördergesetz draft giving politicians a 4:1 majority and will file its response this week.
