DoorDash Launches AI Text-Ordering Beta in Apple Messages

It signals a shift toward agent-driven ordering that personalizes carts using a user’s DoorDash account data.

Overview

  • DoorDash unveiled the Messages agent at its Dash Forward event on Sept. 30 and opened a U.S. iOS waitlist while a roughly 20,000-user preview pilot is already running.
  • The AI agent lets customers place and confirm orders inside Apple’s Messages by scanning local menus, suggesting a cart, and completing checkout without opening the DoorDash app.
  • The system links the phone number in a message to a DoorDash account so it can use past purchases, saved preferences, and stored payment methods to build personalized orders.
  • DoorDash also announced a DoorDash Air drone pilot in northern California with partners including Chipotle and Popeyes and said Dasher Returns, a $7.99 paid pickup-for-returns service, will expand nationwide in November.
  • The company warns the assistant can make mistakes and urges users to verify AI-generated carts; DoorDash is offering enterprise MCP connectors for corporate ordering as part of a broader push into agentic commerce.
