Don Mai Phan Booked on Vehicular Homicide in Fatal Aurora Red-Light Crash

The investigation continues pending the coroner’s release of the 25-year-old victim’s name.

  • Police say an APD motorcycle officer clocked a white BMW at 84 mph in a 65 zone on northbound I-225 around 2 p.m. Thursday and attempted a traffic stop.
  • The driver allegedly used the shoulder, exited at Iliff, ran the red light at South Blackhawk Street, and struck a Honda Civic that was turning left.
  • The Honda’s 25-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the collision split the Civic in two according to police.
  • Officers detained the BMW driver, identified as Don Mai Phan, and a 26-year-old passenger, who were treated for minor injuries before Phan was booked.
  • Phan faces felony vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding plus misdemeanor reckless driving and speeding, is held on $50,000 bail, and has a court appearance set for formal filing of charges; APD asks anyone with information to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers.
