Domestic Worker Burned in Karachi Acid Attack

Provincial leaders ordered urgent medical care as police search CCTV and witnesses to find the assailant.

Overview

  • The attack took place on Thursday in Upper Gizri, Clifton, when an unidentified man on a motorcycle allegedly threw acid at a woman walking between houses where she worked.
  • Police identified the victim as Mumtaz, a domestic worker from Bahawalpur, and hospital staff say she sustained burns to roughly 15% of her face, neck and abdomen and is being treated at the Civil Hospital Burns Centre.
  • Investigators have recorded the woman's initial statement in which she said she does not know the attacker but could identify him, and officers are collecting CCTV footage and speaking to relatives and witnesses.
  • Sindh leaders including the chief minister and home minister have condemned the attack, directed the South SSP to supervise the probe and demanded the immediate arrest of the suspect.
  • The case fits a wider pattern of acid violence in Pakistan with NGO estimates of 150–200 incidents a year and follows a June 2026 Supreme Court ruling that called acid attacks worse than murder and urged faster trials.
