Overview
- The Dome Fire began on Sept. 15 in remote backcountry about a quarter mile north of Chilnualna Falls and is visible from Wawona Road.
- As of Sept. 29 the fire has grown to roughly 5,484 acres and is approximately 34% contained with only modest daily growth reported.
- The U.S. Forest Service has attributed the blaze to an abandoned campfire and crews are using Minimal Impact Suppression Tactics including indirect handlines, pack mules, and limited aviation under a Temporary Flight Restriction.
- Two helicopter crew members, identified as Greg King and Ryan Cutter, were killed in a crash on Sept. 21 and their deaths have prompted aviation safety reviews and operational changes.
- Glacier Point Road and multiple backcountry trails remain closed, smoke is causing variable air quality across the park, and managers warn that warmer, drier, windier weather could prompt renewed spread and further access restrictions.
