Overview
- The public hearing on June 23 at Doloo Tea Estate concluded peacefully with 145 of 151 memorandums, or nearly 95 percent, in favour of the airport.
- The state plans to acquire 2,500 bighas (826.45 acres) of land to establish a civilian airport that addresses capacity limits at the defence-run Kumbhirgram facility.
- Doloo Tea Estate workers represented by the Asom Mojuri Shramik Union and other trade unions have called for alternative land allotment and enhanced rehabilitation packages.
- Government officials project that the airport will spur tourism, expand regional access throughout the Barak Valley, and unlock new trade and job opportunities in southern Assam.
- Although the Airports Authority of India granted site clearance, the project must still secure environmental clearance and in-principle approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
