Dolby Vision 2 Launches With AI to Fix Dark Scenes and Tame Judder

The upgrade requires new TV silicon, first appearing on Hisense sets with initial support from Canal+.

Overview

  • An AI-based Content Intelligence suite—featuring Precision Black and Light Sense—adapts HDR to the specific content, device and room lighting to address complaints that Dolby Vision can look too dark.
  • Authentic Motion gives creators shot-by-shot control over de-judder to reduce stutter without the soap‑opera effect, while bi-directional tone mapping lets premium TVs better leverage their brightness and color range.
  • Dolby will badge TVs in two tiers, with mainstream models carrying Dolby Vision 2 and high-end sets labeled Dolby Vision 2 Max for additional premium capabilities.
  • Only new TVs with built-in Dolby Vision 2 support can use the added features, and Hisense will be first to market using MediaTek’s Pentonic 800 chipset.
  • CANAL+ has pledged Dolby Vision 2 delivery for movies, series and live sports, and current Dolby Vision TVs will play the content but won’t read the new metadata; Dolby has not provided a consumer-availability timeline.
