DOJ Removes Nevada From 'Sanctuary' List After Cooperation Deal

The memorandum makes Nevada the first state taken off the DOJ’s list following the agency’s push for local cooperation on immigration enforcement.

Overview

  • Nevada signed a memorandum of understanding committing to “fully collaborate” with federal authorities on immigration enforcement, according to the DOJ.
  • The agreement cites steps including using FEMA funds to strengthen support from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for federal operations.
  • Gov. Joe Lombardo authorized the Nevada National Guard to assist with Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities, the DOJ said.
  • The DOJ said Nevada is the first state removed since the August publication of jurisdictions labeled as having policies that impede federal immigration law.
  • Attorney General Pamela Bondi praised Nevada’s move and highlighted that the list, created under President Trump’s Executive Order 14287, will be updated as jurisdictions change their policies.
