DOJ Opens Epstein-Related Inquiry at Trump’s Request as House Releases Emails Naming President

The Justice Department tapped Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton after Trump dismissed newly released Epstein emails that mention him.

Overview

  • House Oversight released about 20,000 pages of Epstein-related records, including emails in which Epstein wrote that Donald Trump "knew about the girls" and spent hours with a victim later identified by House Republicans as the late Virginia Giuffre.
  • Asked aboard Air Force One about the "knew about the girls" line, Trump said he knows nothing about it and told a reporter "quiet" when pressed.
  • Trump called the disclosures a hoax and publicly urged probes of Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, and JPMorgan; Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed SDNY U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to lead the investigation.
  • An earlier DOJ/FBI memo from July reported no incriminating client list and no basis to open cases against uncharged third parties, while the White House says Democrats selectively leaked the new emails.
  • A bipartisan discharge petition has forced a House vote next week on a bill to require release of unclassified Epstein files, which would still need Senate approval and the president’s signature to take effect.
