DOJ Charges San Diego Man Over Mailed Death Threat to Conservative Commentator Benny Johnson

The case remains under active investigation with a maximum five-year penalty if convicted.

Overview

  • Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday that George Russell Isbell Jr., 69, was arrested Oct. 7 in San Diego and charged federally with mailing threatening communications.
  • Investigators from the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, FDLE and Tampa police traced the letter to San Diego and matched fingerprints on the envelope to Isbell.
  • Prosecutors say the Sept. 18 mailing referenced Charlie Kirk, called for Johnson’s “extermination,” said he should be strangled by an American flag, and hoped someone would blow his head off.
  • The criminal complaint includes the text of the letter, which referred to Johnson as “Charlie Kirk Jr.”; Isbell has not entered a plea and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
  • Officials said related inquiries continue, with Bondi warning that threats will be prosecuted and FBI Director Kash Patel pledging to pursue those responsible for violent communications.
