Overview
- The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice from midnight 18 November to 11am 19 November, with a cold spell expected to continue through the week.
- Dogs Trust says rock salt and grit used on roads can injure paw pads, causing dryness, cracking, redness, bleeding or burns.
- The charity warns that licking salt or grit can trigger stomach upset or salt poisoning, with possible vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, seizures and, in severe cases, kidney damage or coma.
- Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol poses a severe toxicity risk to pets due to its sweet taste, and even small amounts can be fatal.
- Owners are advised to wipe paws after every walk, check between the toes, store de-icers securely, seek immediate veterinary help if exposure is suspected, and follow wider winter tips such as keeping dogs warm, avoiding frozen water, improving visibility and checking leads.
