Dogs Trust Issues Winter Alert on Rock Salt, Grit and Antifreeze Risks to Dogs

The charity urges paw checks after walks in response to a Met Office yellow ice warning.

Overview

  • Following a Met Office yellow warning for ice from midnight to 11am on November 19 in Coventry and Warwickshire, local outlets relayed fresh safety advice for pet owners.
  • Dogs Trust branches in Manchester, Kenilworth and Merseyside urge owners to wipe dogs’ paws after every winter walk, including between the toes, to remove salt and grit.
  • The charity warns that rock salt and de‑icing grit can dry and crack paw pads and, if licked, may cause stomach upset or salt poisoning with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst, tremors and seizures.
  • Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol is described as highly toxic to pets, with even small amounts potentially fatal because its sweet taste can entice animals.
  • Owners are advised to store antifreeze and de‑icing products securely, watch for early poisoning signs and seek immediate veterinary care, with additional tips to keep dogs warm, on leads, off ice and visible during darker walks.
