DOE Issues $2.7 Billion in Milestone Orders to Rebuild U.S. Uranium Enrichment

The decade-long milestone program targets new enrichment capacity to lessen reliance on Russian supplies.

Overview

  • The Department of Energy selected American Centrifuge Operating, General Matter, and Orano Federal Services for $900 million each, with $28 million awarded to Global Laser Enrichment.
  • DOE assigned HALEU build-out to ACO and General Matter and LEU expansion to Orano to supply today’s reactors and advanced designs while moving away from Russian fuel before a 2028 cutoff.
  • Funding will be released under strict milestones over roughly 10 years, with contract finalization, licensing submissions, and early site work now expected to begin.
  • Centrus outlined a multi-billion-dollar expansion in Piketon, Ohio that would add about 1,000 construction and 300 operating jobs and bring initial new capacity online in 2029.
  • General Matter is advancing a Paducah, Kentucky project under a DOE lease with access to 7,600 UF6 cylinders, and Orano is progressing a planned LEU facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
