DOE Funds UNITY-3 Breeding-Blanket Test Facility at Oak Ridge

The accelerator-based 14 MeV neutron lab will close a key gap in fusion fuel testing by measuring tritium production to validate blanket designs, models, AI tools.

  • The Department of Energy confirmed funding and Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Kyoto Fusioneering announced the UNITY-3 project and Kyoto Fusioneering’s move of its U.S. headquarters to Tennessee on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 11–12, 2026.
  • UNITY-3 is being designed as an accelerator-driven test facility that produces about 14 MeV neutrons to mimic the neutron environment inside a working fusion plasma and to expose prototype breeding blankets to fusion-like conditions.
  • The facility will carry advanced sensors to measure neutron flux and directly quantify tritium production, providing the high-fidelity data needed to validate neutronics codes and feed AI-driven digital twins of blanket systems.
  • Kyoto Fusioneering and ORNL say UNITY-3 will operate as an open, shared resource for multiple fusion developers, letting companies test and de-risk blanket designs that must breed scarce tritium inside lithium-bearing shells.
  • UNITY-3 completes the UNITY testing chain that follows UNITY-1 in Japan and UNITY-2 in Canada and aligns with the DOE Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap by addressing the urgent technical gap in breeding-blanket validation and tritium supply.
