DOE Extends HALEU Access With Conditional Commitments to Three U.S. Developers

The move addresses a near-term fuel shortfall for advanced reactor developers.

Overview

  • The Department of Energy issued conditional commitments to supply HALEU to Antares Nuclear, Standard Nuclear, and Abilene Christian University/Natura Resources LLC to meet immediate needs.
  • The new allocations are intended to support testing of two advanced reactor designs and to help launch a domestic advanced fuel line.
  • DOE says HALEU is not currently available from domestic suppliers and is evaluating material from DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration sources to bridge the gap.
  • Earlier in 2025, DOE made its first allocations to five companies, with three of those requiring fuel delivery this year.
  • DOE estimates U.S. demand could reach about 50 metric tons of HALEU per year by 2035, and the fuel—enriched to between 5% and less than 20% U-235—is required by most advanced reactor designs for higher power density and longer cycles.
