Overview
- ChatGPT Mil, which the Defense Department added Monday, August 31, 2026, is accredited to handle Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5 and is built to scale for more than 3 million personnel.
- The addition expands GenAI.mil into a multi-model portal that already includes Google’s Gemini and the newly added Grok for Government so users can pick the model best suited to a task.
- The military version of ChatGPT runs in a separate, hardened environment that underwent Defense Information Systems Agency and NSA-oriented security reviews to keep government data isolated from commercial models.
- Officials and OpenAI say the tool is meant for document-heavy, unclassified tasks such as planning, policy, logistics and administration and is not being positioned for combat because it needs continuous connectivity and large compute resources.
- The rollout is led by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office and the Office of the Under Secretary for Research and Engineering, builds on a 2025 enterprise agreement with OpenAI, and will continue phased testing and feature rollouts while other vendor integrations remain under evaluation.
