DNA Reanalysis Finds No Match to 11 Suspects in Italy’s ‘Unabomber’ Case

Prosecutors will review a 2,000-page report before a 20 October hearing.

Overview

  • Independent experts Giampietro Lago and Elena Pilli reported that genetic traces from explosive devices did not correspond to any of the eleven people under investigation.
  • Hundreds of comparisons covered both older and newly recovered items, with about 39 control profiles from investigators and technicians used to account for possible contamination.
  • The court-ordered forensic report, roughly 2,000 pages, will be provided to the parties ahead of an incidente probatorio set for 20 October in Trieste.
  • Given the negative findings, longstanding contamination concerns, and near-expired statutes of limitation, prosecutors are expected to consider another archival closure of the case.
  • The probe was reopened in 2023 after a 2022 complaint by journalist Marco Maisano and two victims; victims voiced disappointment at the results, while defense lawyers, including Elvo Zornitta’s counsel, expressed satisfaction.
