DNA Genealogy Identifies Algonquin Park Remains as Ohio Man Missing Since 1973

Investigative genetic genealogy linked the decades-old remains to Eric “Ricky” Singer, giving his family long-sought answers.

Overview

  • Ontario Provincial Police announced on Sept. 4 that the remains are those of Eric (Ricky) Singer of Cleveland, Ohio.
  • Singer was last seen at his parents’ home in Berea, Ohio, on Oct. 4, 1973, and investigators do not suspect foul play.
  • A hiker discovered human remains on April 19, 1980 near Algonquin Park’s Hardwood Lookout Trail along with a boot, wallet, clothing, a sleeping bag and camping gear.
  • Investigators later found a jawbone in 1995 linked to the same person, and a 2017 clay facial reconstruction generated tips but no identification.
  • OPP submitted DNA to the DNA Doe Project in 2022, developed a likely match in September 2023 and confirmed his identity in February 2025 after contacting his sisters, who visited the site with investigators this summer.
