DNA From Preserved Paper Bags Identifies Vincent Groves in 1987 Douglas County Homicide

Investigators say a CODIS hit from DNA preserved inside paper bags tested this year provided the decisive link.

Overview

  • Rhonda Marie Fisher, 30, was found sexually assaulted and strangled off South Perry Park Road near Sedalia on April 1, 1987.
  • After a 2017 DNA effort produced no leads, the Cold Case Unit reexamined the evidence in 2025 and focused on paper bags placed over Fisher’s hands at the scene.
  • In October, a national database match connected DNA recovered from the bag interiors to Vincent Darrell Groves, aligning with profiles from three 1979 homicides.
  • Forensic scientists reported that skin cells from Fisher’s hands transferred to the bags, yielding a mixture of her DNA and Groves’ DNA.
  • Groves is considered one of Colorado’s most prolific serial killers, is believed responsible for at least 12 homicides, died in custody in 1996, and the sheriff’s office has now closed Fisher’s case after announcing the identification.
