DNA Confirms Culled Mother Bear Killed 26-Year-Old on Hokkaido's Mount Rausu

DNA evidence from the victim's clothing identified the mother bear removed near the site as the attacker.

Overview

  • The Hokkaido Prefectural Research Institute matched hair and saliva on the victim's clothing to DNA taken from the culled bear's liver.
  • The victim, identified as Keisuke Soda, 26, was attacked on Aug. 14 on a trail around 550 meters elevation and found on Aug. 15 about 200 meters from the site.
  • Police said he died from blood loss caused by multiple traumatic injuries.
  • Hunters shot an adult female bear and two cubs during the search near where the body was later recovered.
  • Officials kept a bear caution advisory for the Mount Rausu trail following recent stalking and sighting reports, and the prefecture also recorded a separate fatal bear attack in July in Fukushima Town.
