DMV’s ‘Operation Prevent’ Seizes 343 Fake IDs, Issues 313 Citations at New York Summer Venues

Officials warn online fake-ID purchases can expose underage buyers’ personal data to identity thieves.

Overview

  • Long Island accounted for 58 citations and 65 seized IDs, according to the state DMV.
  • Most incidents involved under-21 patrons trying to buy alcohol at concerts, bars or restaurants, including checks at Jones Beach Theater, Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Darien Lake.
  • Violations can lead to fines as well as driver’s-license suspension or revocation lasting from 90 days to one year.
  • The DMV emphasized identity-theft risks from internet vendors, citing Veriff data that 32.2% of college students admit owning a fake ID ordered online.
  • Officials said many counterfeits are produced overseas, which hinders prosecution, and noted this year’s results track closely with 2024 and are well below the 2022 peak.
