Overview
- The DMK executive committee approved the overhaul on Saturday, setting explicit age and term limits including branch secretaries at 45 or younger for no more than two terms and district secretaries under 70 for up to three terms.
- The party will expand its organisational map from about 77–78 units to 110 districts, and M. K. Stalin was authorised to draw the new boundaries with each district executive given 15 days after the map is announced to form lower-level units.
- A new urban branch structure will be piloted in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Salem to create city-level branch secretaries and strengthen ward-to-branch mobilisation.
- The rules are expected to disqualify roughly 22 sitting district secretaries and bring about 55 new faces into district posts, a change that will shift local power networks and remove several long-serving regional leaders.
- Operational steps to implement the revamp include a 38-member grassroots feedback committee, a public input website and a planned membership drive tied to the party’s upcoming Mupperum Vizha, followed by organisational elections.
