dm Plans In-Store Heart Checks Using Sensor Cabins

The retailer says the service could widen access to cardiovascular screening in Germany.

Overview

  • dm announced plans to offer heart and cardiovascular checks in stores using automated sensor-equipped cabins and said it expects to begin the service this calendar year.
  • The company is also expanding its eye‑screening pilot from 8 to 30 branches with store renovations planned for late August and September.
  • The Wettbewerbszentrale has sued over dm’s eye screenings and will face the company at the Landgericht Karlsruhe on September 9 with a separate Düsseldorf case set for November.
  • Medical groups including the Bundesärztekammer and cardiology societies warn that short, automated retail tests produce isolated momentary readings without clinical context and note that independent clinical trials of similar measurement cabins are still ongoing.
  • dm has paused on-site blood analyses while saying it will take greater control of blood testing, and the outcome of the court cases and cabin trials could shape whether and how retail chains can offer diagnostic services and affect patient access in rural areas.
