DLSS 5 Launches for RTX 50 Series

The new neural renderer demands heavy GPU compute and raises cooling and power needs for high-end cards.

Overview

  • NVIDIA released DLSS 5 on Friday with official support limited to GeForce RTX 50-series and initial availability in NBA 2K27.
  • NVIDIA told reporters it will extend official DLSS 5 support to the RTX 40-series after further optimization of the model for Blackwell hardware.
  • Community developers quickly ported DLSS 5 features to older cards, with dashdogy enabling DLSS multi-frame generation on RTX 40 GPUs and danielblnc running DLSS 5 on AMD RDNA4 hardware in early mods.
  • Independent tests show DLSS 5 sharply raises GPU power draw, for example ComputerBase measured the RTX 5090 rising from about 299W to 500W at WQHD and from 417W to 561W at 4K.
  • NVIDIA will limit player-facing controls to a simple on/off switch, anti-cheat systems block modified DLLs in multiplayer, and higher power and cooling needs could force users to upgrade power supplies and cooling solutions.
