DJ Carey Jailed for Five and a Half Years for €400,000 Fraud After Falsely Claiming Cancer

The judge said he exploited people's goodwill.

Overview

  • Dublin Circuit Criminal Court imposed a global term of five and a half years after setting a headline range of eight to ten years.
  • Carey pleaded guilty to 10 counts of deception, with eight further fraud counts and two false-instrument counts taken into consideration.
  • The court heard he obtained €394,127 and $13,000 from about 22 people between 2014 and 2022, repaying roughly €44,200, with about €349,927 and $13,000 still outstanding.
  • Gardaí found forged hospital letters and no medical or travel records supporting his claims, including no US travel since 2015 and no record at Fred Hutch Cancer Centre.
  • Victims included high-profile figures such as Denis O’Brien, who gave more than €125,000, as Carey admitted he fabricated the illness to buy time over AIB debts and there is no immediate prospect of restitution.
