Diwali Rush Chokes Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru Despite Diversions, Extra Buses

Extra police, diversions, special buses failed to prevent long delays or poor air.

Overview

  • Delhi Traffic Police enforced 2 pm–10 pm restrictions through October 21 around Chandni Chowk and Old Delhi with diversions, designated parking and a ban on e‑rickshaws and autos beyond key checkpoints.
  • Over 23,000 Delhi Police personnel, with CAPF and RAF support, conducted flag marches and anti‑sabotage checks at markets, railway stations and bus terminals to manage crowds and security.
  • Bengaluru flagged six congestion hotspots as KSRTC operated 2,500 additional buses, yet passengers reported jammed terminals, bus shortages and higher private fares.
  • New Delhi Railway Station handled about 75,000 passengers on Saturday as Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected arrangements and crowd management.
  • CPCB readings kept Delhi‑NCR air in the poor to very poor range, adding health concerns to prolonged traffic snarls.
