Overview
- Rescuers located five of the seven villagers alive on Wednesday in a terminal chamber roughly 300–340 metres from the cave entrance and delivered food, water and basic checks while the search continues for two missing people.
- Teams face a hazardous evacuation because much of the route is flooded and extremely narrow, with reported choke points as small as about 60cm that force divers to remove equipment to pass.
- More than 100 people including Lao military and medical teams, Thai cave divers and international specialists are using pumps, forced airflow, cleared sediment and temporary road and comms lines to stabilise conditions ahead of extraction.
- Local rescuers say the group entered the cave to look for gold, a common artisanal practice in the area that exposes people to sudden flash floods and landslides during heavy rain.
- The operation draws on experience from the 2018 Tham Luang rescue with veteran divers on site, but rescuers warn extraction will be technically different and riskier because of tighter passages, contaminated air and collapse hazards.
