DIU Contracts Pratt Miller for Expeditionary Hydrogen Supply Prototype

Field tests later this year will validate the system’s ability to generate, store, dispense hydrogen for maritime, shore operations.

Overview

  • The Defense Innovation Unit awarded Pratt Miller a contract on July 30 to prototype the Expeditionary Hydrogen On Ship & Shore (EHOSS) system in a containerized form factor
  • The unit uses a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer to produce over 20 kilograms of hydrogen daily, compress gas to 700 bar and store it in conformable tanks for low-heat, low-noise operations
  • EHOSS establishes a self-sufficient micro hydrogen supply chain adaptable to remote, wide-range contested environments without dependence on external fuel convoys
  • Initial trials, including solid-state storage evaluations using nanomaterials, are scheduled for later this year to demonstrate field performance
  • The project unites DIU with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Office and research teams from the Navy and Army
