Data from over a thousand US children indicate that post-COVID assessment needs to be tailored to each age group.

Overview

  • RECOVER study surveyed caregivers of 472 infants/toddlers and 539 preschoolers to document symptoms persisting beyond 90 days after COVID-19
  • Among children with confirmed infections, 14% of infants and toddlers and 15% of preschoolers were classified as likely having long COVID
  • Infants and toddlers most commonly displayed sleep disturbances, fussiness, poor appetite, nasal congestion and cough
  • Preschool-aged children predominantly reported a dry cough accompanied by daytime fatigue or low energy
  • Researchers caution that caregiver-reported survey data may be affected by recall bias and stress the need for screening approaches tailored to each developmental stage
